Current Research

Westlund spends most of his time researching the dynamic interplay between the public, the media and the authorities with regards to crises, for a research project titled Crisis Communication 2.0 placed at University of Gothenburg. He also works on a collaborative project with Ericsson, Carmenta and Security Arena called SOMCRISC, focusing trends and scenarios on how digital and social media may change the conditions for crisis communication. Both projects are funded by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency. Westlund also conducts research for the DMC research group at the IT University of Copenhagen, focusing especially on how mobile media and mobile news are gaining traction among users as well as legacy news media. Westlund is currently guest editing a special section on mobile news consumption for SAGE journal Mobile Media & Communication set to be published in 2015 (3:2).
